I have a question for you! Since the temps have started to rise in the past few weeks I've noticed my runs require more of an effort to maintain the same pace, I understand the body requires more energy to cool, but I always seem to smell like amonia aftewards. Does this mean I'm not fueling my body right??
The "smell" could actually be a few different things. First, the smell is coming from nitrogen, which is a byproduct of protein breakdown, and is being excreted in your sweat. Reasons for this could be underhydration or consuming too much protein which cannot be fully excreted by the kidneys through urination. The daily recommended intake (DRI) of water for men is 3.7 liters. That is without exercise though and doesn't take into account climate variations. Approximately 20% of this will come from food intake and water should make up for the rest. However, to address your individual needs, I suggest you use the Sweat Rate Calculator on the Homepage to get the most accurate numbers.
Your specific protein needs will be directly associated with your training regimen and intensity. Endurance athletes should consume between 0.6-0.7 g of protein per pound of bodyweight. Take a closer look at your nutritional intake to see if you're achieving this. I hope this helps!
